Rottweiler dogs are one of the oldest surviving dog breeds to date. They are from the Roman times when they used to drive things.

They are medium to large-sized dogs with a double coat that has short length. They commonly come in black and tan color.

Their specialty was to herd livestock and pull carts to the market.

From there to the old city rottweiler, they were guard dogs, rescue dogs, and watchdogs for their large size and ability to protect.

They got their name from the Rottweiler city of Germany. They got mixed with the local dogs through the natural crossing, and today we see their different breeds as American and German rottweilers.

How are they different from each other or do they have any difference apart from their names? Let’s uncover that in this blog.

German rottweiler

As the name suggests, these dog breeds are from Germany. They were born and bred in Germany and resemble the original rottweiler of Roman times than any other type.

They are larger dogs whose features and traits are intact to the original breed. They serve as guard dogs, military dogs, therapy dogs, watchdogs, and service dogs.

They have muscular necks, broad heads, almond-shaped eyes, and floppy ears.

They are taller than American rottweilers be it a few inches

Their tail is not docked but is slender, similar to the original breed. It is the most prominent difference between the two breeds of rottweiler.

They are a recognized breed by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK) in Germany. This club has strict rules for the breeding of rottweiler. The parent dogs undergo a suitability test before accepting their puppy as a standard dog.

No faulty puppy gets any approval from ADRK. Due to the originality of traits and features, German rottweilers are more expensive than American rottweilers. Their price goes up to 3000$ with additional shipping charges.

American rottweiler

American rottweilers are bred and born in this country but have many similarities to their cousin breed in Germany.

They are standard breeds by the American Kennel Club. However, this club has no strict rules for dog breeding. You only have to register the parent breed in the club and their faulty breed(if any) can also be approved.

That is why many genetic diseases are common in this breed. They are also slightly shorter and have leaner bodies and necks than German rottweiler.

Additionally, American rottweiler has their tail docked, which is not allowed in Germany. It is mainly done for cosmetic purposes or to make it different than other breeds.

They are less expensive than German rottweiler.

American rottweilers are less aggressive, more people-oriented, and more intelligent. They are kept as companion dogs more often than service dogs in America.

If you want a dog who will protect you and give you company if trained well, then this dog is for you.

Conclusion:

German and American rottweilers almost share the same intelligence and warm nature apart from their size and features. German rottweilers are large and don’t have docked tails. They were bred as service dogs.

On the other hand, American rottweilers have docked tails and are used as companion dogs.
