Maltipoo is a designer dog breed famous for affectionate and child-loving toy dogs. Many families make Maltipoos their family pets for their loving nature and charisma.

They are easier to train with just love and kindness than other dog breeds that consume most of your energy.

This dog breed can live up to 12-14 years because of their short size when kept well. However, everything comes with its disadvantages as well.

Maltipoos can develop many health diseases and cause worries and traumas for the pet and its owner.

 

What are minor health issues in Maltipoos?

  1. Mat forming

Maltipoos have medium to long hair and shed once in a blue moon. It is a good thing for the owner. But they may neglect their need for daily hair brushing.

That shouldn’t be the scenario, you need to comb their hair daily, otherwise, they will get mats in their hair due to excessive knots.

It is not only painful but can lead to skin infection due to fungal and bacterial growth. The fur color can also become dull if not brushed daily and washed once every month.

 

  1. Tear stain

Maltipoos have long hair all over their body: around their eyes and noses. It causes irritation and excessive tear production that could stain their white fur brown.

You should always trim the hair around their eyes and nose, otherwise, this hair can seriously cause eye infections.

To remove tear stains, use dog wipes under their eyes twice a day or massage with coconut oil.

 

What are serious health issues in Maltipoo?

1) Patellar Luxation

Joint issues in dogs are a common disease that could restrict their physical activities. In Maltipoos, this condition occurs when their kneecap slips from their position. It causes difficulty while walking with severe pain. In worst cases, surgery is performed to align the kneecap in its position.

It can return to its normal position if the luxation is minor.

You should maintain your puppy’s ideal weight to avoid patellar luxation.

A dog needs to go to rehabilitation for physical well-being.

 

2) Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease / Perthese disease

It is the joint deformation in the femur bone head and results in stiffness of the hips and knees accompanied by severe pain while walking and during other physical exercises.

This disease occurs when a dog is 4 months to one year old.

A surgical procedure named FHO (femoral head osteotomy) is necessary to treat deformation and initiation of new bone growth.

 

3) Periodontitis

The dental and gum diseases in small-breed puppies are more prone to bacterial and viral infections.

It causes tooth decay, tissue damage around teeth and gum, and bone resorption.

Their teeth should be brushed a few times weekly to avoid the foul smell and bacterial growth inside their mouth.

4) Seizures

Maltipoos are hypoglycemic and low blood sugar results in body stiffness and eventually collapse, resulting in seizures and epilepsy.

It is common in short-size breeds due to inflammation in the central nervous system.

It occurs in dogs due to stress and anxiety. You must take extra care of your puppy and be gentle with them for their stress-free life.
