What are the different types of Rottweiler?

When it comes to Rottweilers, there is quite confusion about their breeds. Some say there are three types of purebred, while others say there is only one standard Rottweiler dog breed, qualified by kennel clubs

This is a serious concern for many buyers who suffer while purchasing purebred Rottweilers.

Apart from purebred, there are many hybrids of Rottweilers known as mud.

Let’s discuss the main types of Rottweiler purebred first.

Types of Rottweiler(pure-breed)

These dog breeds are named based on the country they are born in.

  1. German Rottweiler:

German Rottweilers are born in Germany and are standard dogs by “Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK), which strictly follows the criteria while breeding.

They are masculine working dogs bred to serve as service dogs, guard dogs, watchdogs, and rescue dogs.

They are larger and have stocky head and neck. Their coat covers their whole body, and the chances of hair shedding are high in them.

This dog breed resembles the original Rottweiler bred back by the Roman legions.

American Rottweiler:

These dogs are born in America’s so-called American Rottweilers. They have slender figures, long necks, and short hair coats. This breed is less masculine than German Rottweilers and has docked tails.

Their undercoat doesn’t cover their whole body.

Their size is usually 22-27 inches and weighs 35-60kgs.

These dogs are officially qualified as standard dogs by the American Kennel Club.

Roman Rottweiler/Gladiator Rottweiler

These dogs were bred by Romans thousands of years ago. Their ancestors were mastiffs who were herding dogs for cattle.

It is an overly large-sized dog breed compared to German and American Rottweilers. Their height roughly goes up 30 inches and weighs up to 130 pounds.

However, they are not considered standard breeds by AAKC and ADRK due to their large size, which is not in the breeding criteria of pure Rottweiler. They are more prone to joint issues due to their giant figure.

Rare Rottweiler

Rare Rottweilers are often bred with different dog breeds to get variation in color, size, and trait. They may come in colors red, blue, white, and albino. It may be due to recessive genes in any parent dogs. The only standard Rottweiler color is black with rust tanning.

Other rare Rottweilers come with long hair disqualified by AKC and ADRK.  These dogs are faulty and often bred by backyard breeders. Selling these breeds as pure breeds is unethical and should be discouraged.

Tailed Rottweilers:

These dogs come up with tails that are naturally present in this breed. AKC docks the dog tail when they are only a few days old.

However, Germans strictly followed the rule and have banned tail docking since 1999. That’s why more-tailed Rottweilers are present today.

What are the different hybrids/crossbreeds of Rottweilers?

The hybrid dog breed is obtained by crossing Rottweiler with other large and small breeds. It was to get different colors, sizes, and shapes of opposite crosses. They are not considered pure nor recognized as a standard breed by AKC and ADRK.

Some of the hybrid Rottweilers have the following names.

Rottsky: Cross between a Rottweiler and a Siberian husky to get a dog with bright blue eyes, and an independent, stubborn temperament.

Bullweiler: A cross between a Rottweiler and an American bulldog

Rotthua: A cross between a Rottweiler and a Chihuahua

Shepweiler: A cross between a Rottweiler and a German shepherd

Pitweiler: A cross between a Rottweiler and a Pitbull terrier

Boxrott: A cross between a Rottweiler and a Boxer
