Toy poodles are show dogs bred in 18 or 19th century from miniature poodles. They are one of the smallest and most charming dog breeds. People love making them a part of their family for their global fame. They are very friendly, active and intelligent. However, there are always two sides to a coin, and so has toy poodle. Pros of having a toy poodle
1. No shedding
Toy poodles have a single coat of curly or wavy hair. The good news is they don’t shed hair, and if they do, it is a bare minimum. You will not see hair everywhere in your house after having them.
2. Cause no allergy
Toy Poodles don’t cause allergies, unlike other dog breeds of larger size. They are hypoallergenic and only shed a few allergens that cause infections. If you are hyper-allergic to dogs, then this dog will be a great companion in your household.
3. Apartment friendly
Poodles are only 10 inches long and less than 10 pounds. They don’t need a spacious house and yard to live in. They can happily live in your small apartments as well. If you are an apartment person living in a city, then a toy poodle is the best choice for you.
4. Easy to Transport
Unlike large dog breeds, you can take poodles anywhere with you, whether going for groceries or traveling outside of your city or country. Some airlines allow small dogs in their planes. If you travel a lot, you won’t have to worry or leave your toy poodle behind.
Cons of having a toy poodle
1) Grooming
Just because poodles don’t shed hair often that doesn’t mean they are low-maintenance dogs. Their curly and wavy hair need daily brushing to avoid mating and knotting. Apart from daily brushing, they require professional grooming every month.
You can learn professional grooming yourself after observing a few times from any professional.
2) Exercise and mental stimulation
Toy poodles are hyperactive dogs who need regular physical exercise and mental stimulation. They were hunting dogs primarily who would retrieve waterfowl hunted by hunters.
They used to spend most of their time swimming and running in water.
From there, they have got their hyper energy. You have to take them on brisk walks and for swimming. They need toys and puzzles for mental stimulation, which can be costly.
3) Behavioral issues / emotional sensitivity
Toy poodles are highly human-oriented dogs ready to please their owners and thrive in their companionship. They can develop separation anxiety if you leave them for a longer time.
They can become anxious in front of strangers. They also become stressed out in noisy surroundings, unfortunately.
Therefore, they are not ideal pets in noisy households filled with strangers from time to time.
4) Health issues
Toy poodles were bred due to their beauty and short size. When breeders neglect the standard breeding process, the dogs face many diseases. Toy poodles also suffer from diseases such as low sugar levels, hypothyroidism, Addison’s disease, bloating, hip dysplasia, eye infections, tracheal collapse, and the list goes on.
It can be hard for the owner to take care of this fragile creature who can become a dog, who was a hospital.
